    We sing from the The Sacred Harp (1991 revision), The Shenandoah Harmony, and sometimes other shape note sources. All are welcome, no experience is required, and loaner tune books are available.

    Thursday, March 12, 6-8 PM. The Society for American Music is holding their annual academic convention in Richmond. Among their number are folks who are singers, and their tradition is to host a singing before their convention begins. We are "hosting" their singing in the Common Grounds area of St. Giles. Their folks are going to arrive about 5:30 for room set up. If you are able to assist, that would be great, but it's not necessary. They estimated that they will have 20-30 attendees from their convention. Half way through, Dr. Brandon Dye, University of Florida, will present a Sacred Harp-related song associated with his conference paper about the Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School's jubilee chorus.

    Parking
    • Several garages are nearby. The Church Street Garage (17 E Church St, Frederick, MD 21701) is convenient; the map will show the short walk to the rear entrance.

    Late arrival
    • If you arrive a bit late, the door may be locked. We’ll provide a same-day phone number or email so someone can come down and let you in.

    Accessibility
    • The singing space is on the second floor; there is an elevator near the stairs.
    • Restrooms open off the main hall (no stairs/elevator required to reach them).
    • Specific accessibility features TBD (to be updated).

    Books & loaners
    • Planned books: The Sacred Harp (2025 Edition), The Valley Pocket Harmonist, and The Shenandoah Harmony.
    • Please bring your own if you have them. Limited loaners may be available (depending on what can be brought from Baltimore).

    Snacks / social time
    • Two breaks (15–20 minutes) for snacks and visiting; optional social time (~20–30 minutes) as we wind down.
    • Feel free to bring snacks to share. Paper plates, napkins, and cups provided; water available from the kitchenette.

    • Walk-ins are welcome, but RSVPs are very helpful, particularly if you can lead or key.

    Please join us in beautiful Charlottesville for the resumption of our all-day shape note singing! Singing will be half day Sacred Harp (2025 edition) and half day Shenandoah Harmony, separated by dinner on the grounds.

    Location: the Saturday singing will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ivy, about 10-15 minutes outside of Charlottesville. Ample parking is available in a leafy onsite lot. The parish hall and all required facilities are accessible to those with mobility considerations via a level sidewalk coming from four handicapped parking spaces.

    Transportation: As well as long distance Amtrak trains connecting Charlottesville to the likes of New York, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta and DC, there is a teensy little regional airport (code CHO) that connects us with Chicago, Charlotte, Atlanta, DC and NYC (LaGuardia). You can fly to DC and connect by public transportation, but note that if you fly to Richmond an hour away, there is (MADDENINGLY) no public transport connection to Charlottesville, so you'll want to either rent a car or connect with us to see if we can coordinate a pickup.
    Lodging: We have a decent amount of local hosting available for out of town singers, so get in touch if you need somewhere to stay! The singing venue is a little out of town in nearby Ivy, so if you're taking Amtrak to Charlottesville and arranging your own place to stay, please get in touch to get a lift out to the singing.
